Divorce by phone

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
As-Salaamu-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:
What do you say if a man divorces his wife via mobile phone or text message? Is she divorced or not?.
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

If the man says to his wife over the phone, “You are divorced” or “I divorce you,” then it counts as one divorce (talaaq), just as if he said that in her presence, or he said it in her absence without using the phone.

Similarly, if he writes a message on the mobile phone addressed to his wife in which he says that he has divorced her, or tells someone else that he has divorced his wife, and he intended to divorce her, then that also counts as a divorce.

And Allah knows best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah's Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
