Truth of astrology and palmistry

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Respected Brother Burhan , AssalamAlaikum. i hope you are fine. Brother , in your replies to questions about astrology and palmistry , you have always said that they are all falsehood and that there is no evidence in Quran and Sunnah about their authenticity. I agree with you in that the most of the part of astrology and palmistry is based on guess and conjecture BUT i would say that these `uloom` are not totally wrong as such.since there is always something correct about them. The problem is this that these `uloom` have gone into the hands of `jaahil ` people who know just nothing about astrology or palmistry and who exploit others just to gain money. such people undoubtedly, on the basis of their guess and conjecture misguide other people. My personal opinion is that if the knowledge of astrology /palmistry stays with the wise ones , no one would ever be misguided. becoz the real knowledgeable person would never make false prophecies or predictions but would rather guide others keeping in view their abilities and tendencies. i firmly believe that the lines on our hands DO depict some ( not all ) part of our personalities otherwise they wouldn`t had been there at all. The most important thing is that everyone should NOT just stand up and start reading others hands. since it requires a lot of experience and knowledge and the words of such inexperienced / `jaahil ` ones should not be trusted in the least. Thats why Quran and Sunnah have not permitted it otherwise everyone would had been in a mess.

waiting for your reply.

your sister in Islam.

Truth of astrology and palmistry

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Dear and Beloved Sister in Islam, Allah Subhanah Alone has Decreed and Determined the future of all things, and the knowledge of what will happen in the future is not dependant on the movement of the heavenly bodies or the lines in one’s palms!  The most knowledgeable man who ever walked this planet earth, Prophet Mohamed (saws), never ever declared or made known any future happenings by looking at the stars or the palms of one’s hands; he declared only what was revealed to him by inspiration from the One Who is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 31 Surah Luqman verse 34: Verily the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (Alone).  It is He Who sends down rain, and He Who knows what is in the wombs.  Nor does anyone know what it is that he will earn on the morrow: nor does anyone know in what land he is to die.  Verily with Allah (Alone) is full knowledge and He is acquainted (with all things).

Your Statement: i firmly believe that the lines on our hands DO depict some (not all) part of our personalities otherwise they wouldn`t had been there at all.

The movement of the heavenly bodies in an organized format and order, or the lines of the palms in one’s hands, or the way the dust assembles on something, or the lines drawn by the liquid when the almost empty cup is turned, or the path taken by the blowing wind, etc. are simple acts of nature and nothing else.  If one tries to delve into why nature took its course one way and not the other, and just because he could answer what causes the movement one way or the other determines that it has something to do with the ‘qadr’ or Decree of Allah Subhanah; it would not be considered guidance!

Sahih Muslim Hadith 133      Narrated by Abu Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘Don't you know what your Lord said?  He observed: I have never endowed My bondsmen with a favour, but a section amongst them disbelieved it and said: ‘stars, it was due to the stars.’’

Sahih Muslim Hadith 2033     Narrated by Abu Malik al-Ash'ari

Allah's Messenger (saws) said: ‘Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period of ignorance, which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and wailing.’

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.232         Narrated by Aisha

Some people asked Allah's Messenger (saws) about the fore-tellers. Allah's Messenger (saws) said to them, "They are nothing! (i.e., liars)."  The people said, 'O Allah's Messenger (saws)! Sometimes they tell something which comes out to be true."  Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "That word which comes to be true is what a jinn snatches away by stealing and then pours it in the ear of the fore-teller with a sound similar to the cackle of a hen, and then they add to it one-hundred lies."

It would not be considered intelligence if one determined the important decisions of one’s invaluable life on the movement of the heavenly bodies or the placement of lines in one’s hands; but intelligence would be to study one’s conditions and make those decisions with the available ‘asbaabs’ in light of the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah, and then keeping one’s full trust and belief in the Power of Allah Subhanah.

To believe that anything or anyone holds the knowledge of the future, or to believe that the determination of anything has the power to disclose the future is to share one of the Exclusive Attributes of Allah Subhanah with that thing, be it the stars, or the palms of one’s hands, or the lines of the dust settling on something, etc!; and such belief would, without a doubt, be considered a manifestation of the abomination and heinous sin of ‘shirk’.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 16 Surah Nahl verse 98-100: Then, when you begin to recite the Quran,  seek Allah’s refuge against the accursed Shaytaan, for he has no power over those who believe and put their trust in Allah.   Shaytaan  has power (to inspire) only over those people,  who make him their patron,  and practice ‘shirk’ by his temptation.

It is a natural tendency of man to try and determine his future, but Allah Subhanah in His Infinite Knowledge and Wisdom, has kept the future hidden from men.  The Shaytaan exploits this natural tendency and weakness of man, and tries to inspire him to determine the future from the movement or placements of some things in nature which are beyond men’s comprehension; and thus involve man in the abomination of ‘shirk’!  The believers are commanded to believe with certainty that All Power and All Strength belongs to none except the Lord Most Merciful, and no combination of things have the power to effect him in any way without the precise Will and Permission of Allah Subhanah; thus the complete trust and belief of the believers, who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day, must be on none except Allah Subhanah, the Lord of the Worlds!

If one trusts,  obeys,  and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws),   he can be assured of never ever being misled;   but if one believes,  obeys and follows any other guidance,  other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws),  he can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
