Pious family doing evil deeds

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I have left a corporate position in the risk & insurance industry to help my husband become the head of our family. We have now a successful dairy goat farm. I found out at age 38 that I am adopted so I turned to my husband`s family for support. After living amongst them for 2 years I saw that my mother in law (just deceased) have been abused (beaten at age 87!!!) by her unmarried daughter. In order that the daughter go to Mecca for the 4th time, she instructs her maid to live in with a male stranger! Also I have heard and seen prove that the daughter keeps some form of jin in her. I am still in shock to find all this out especially because these people never leave prayers, fasting, zikir etc which is the main reason that I wanted to be with them in the first place. I know that there are people who associate themselves with the unseen, but my question and fear is how is it that this family can be so pious yet do so much evil? Am I out of my mind or in danger? Help

Answer:

Pious family doing evil deeds

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

It is imperative that no matter what the family of your husband do, you as a believer in Allah and the Last Day, must give them all their rights and duties due to them in the best manner. Unless of course, they do something against the direct commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws); then it is your duty to abstain from such deeds.

Regarding the issue of the ‘jinn’, etc.: please note that no jinn, or no combination of jinns can hurt you or anyone else in the least, without the permission of Allah Subhanah! Thus, a believer, who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day, must put his/her trust in Allah Subhanah Alone; and fear no one save the All Powerful Allah. A believer must be satisfied with the belief, that even if all the jinns and the humans of the world got together and tried to hurt you, they would not be able to do so without the permission of Allah! Thus, take refuge in Allah, put your full trust in the Power and Strength of Allah Subhanah, and do not fear anyone except Him. And constantly supplicate and make dua to Allah Subhanah, and ask for His Protection and Refuge and recite the 113th and 114th Chapter of the Holy Quran (Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) regularly. It is expected that nothing will ever harm a believer who takes refuge in the Lord of the Worlds!

Your Question: my question and fear is how is it that this family can be so pious yet do so much evil?

Prayer, fasts, and dhikr are nothing but signs that a person is Pious and on the Right Path. There are some who perform all the outward signs of piety, but succumb to the evil whisperings of the Shaitaan and do very evil deeds! Allah Subhanah Alone will decide on the Day of Judgement who amongst His creation were true believers and who were practicing falsehoods!

Just wearing the garb of Islam, or doing the outward deeds of Islam, does not guarantee that a person is pious! But piety is to constantly love, fear, obey and follow each and every command of Allah and His Messenger (saws), and forever fear the accounting of an Inevitable Day in the Court of Allah Subhanah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
