Answer:

What to do in muharam ashura

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: ….Can we celebrate islamic New year (muhram). please tell me what should one do during first 10 days of muhram.

Since the annuls of time, it has been customary to track the passage of years through a momentous event which took place in that particular year. The modern era dates its number of years from the birth of the Noble Messenger of Allah, Isa ibn Maryam (a.s.), but at the time the Quran was being revealed, the count of the passage of years in the Arab nation was determined from the year Allah Subhanah annihilated the Yemeni King Abraha and his troops who came on elephants to destroy the Holy Kaaba.

It was only after the death of Prophet Mohamed (saws) that the believers started to record the passage of years from the year of the migration of the Prophet (saws) from Makkah to Madinah or the ‘Hijrah’.

As momentous and as crucial as the event of the ‘Hijrah’ or migration of the Prophet (saws) and the believers from Makkah to Madinah might be in the history of Islam, there is absolutely no recorded evidence in the Sunnah whereby the Prophet (saws) or his noble companions (r.a.) after him (saws) would celebrate or commemorate this day in any way whatsoever.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzab verse 21:

There is indeed the best example for you to follow in the Messenger of Allah, for every such person looks forward to Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.

Your Question: ….please tell me what should one do during first 10 days of muhram.

To the best of our knowledge there is absolutely no evidence in the established Sunnah that the Messenger of Allah (saws) or his noble companions after him ever did anything special in the days or month of Muharram, except the fasting on the day of Aashura which happens to be on the 10th of Muharram.

Ibn 'Abbas reported: "The Messenger of Allah (saws) fasted on the day of 'Ashurah and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said: 'O Messenger of Allah (saws) , it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor.' The Prophet (saws) said, 'When the following year comes--Allah willing--we shall fast (also) on the ninth.' The death of the Prophet (saws) came before the following year."

Related by Muslim and Abu Dawud.

Other than the fasting on the two consecutive days for ‘Ashura’ (the 9th/10th or the 10th/11th), to the best of our knowledge there is absolutely nothing in the authentic and established Sunnah whereby the Messenger of Allah (saws) himself, or his noble companions, or his family, or the earliest generation of believers prayed any specific or special prayer for, or on, or in commemoration of any day in the month of Muharram.

Other than the voluntary fasts on the 9th/10th or 10th/11th of Muharram, performing any special prayers, or rites or rituals in commemoration of this day or month, assuming that their this practice is a part of the deen, or that their these self-invented rites and rituals would earn them extra rewards from Allah Subhanah, etc……especially when such rites and rituals are not endorsed by Allah and His Messenger (saws) would without an iota of a doubt, be a manifestation of the evil sin of ‘bida’ or innovation in the Sight of Allah Subhanah.

Aisha narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘If somebody innovates something which is not present in our religion, then that thing will be rejected.’

Sahih Muslim Hadith 1885 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah

That the Prophet of Allah (saws) said in a sermon: “The best speech is that which is embodied in the Book of Allah, the Al Quran; and the best guidance is the guidance given by me, Mohamed (saws). The most evil affairs are the innovations (bida), and every innovation (bida) is an error.”

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4515 Narrated by Ali ibn AbuTalib

That the Prophet of Allah (saws) said: “If anyone introduces an innovation (bida in religion), he will be responsible for it. If anyone introduces an innovation (bida) or gives shelter to a man who introduces an innovation (bida), he is cursed by Allah, by His Angels, and by all the people!”

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
