Sunnah way to perform ghusl

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 1.58a

According to the practice of the Prophet (saws) the correct manner of performing ghusl is:

1. wash both hands three times,

2. wash the private parts (if sexually impure),

3. make a complete ablution (like the one made for prayer--the Prophet used to delay washing his feet until the end of his ghusl if he was using a tub, and so on),

4. rub water through one`s hair three times, letting the water reach down to the roots of the hair, pour water over the entire body, begining with the right side, then the left, washing under the armpits, inside the ears, inside the navel, inside the toes and whatever part of the body can be easily rubbed. This account is based on the following report from `Aishah: "When the Prophet (saws) took his bath after sexual intercourse, he would begin by washing his hands. Then he would pour water from his right hand to his left and wash his sexual organs, make the ablution for prayer, take some water and put his fingers to the roots of his hair to the extent that he sees that the skin is wet, then pour water over his head three times and then over the rest of his body."

dear brother i am really confused that many places you have answered that prophet (SAWS)`s sunnah was just to take full bath. You mentioned that that was the way prophet (SAWS) use to perform ghusl there is no need to pour water 3 times or100 times while performing ghusl . if so than above hadith is telling something diffrent plz explain one more thing is confusing me that just taking normal shower makes us ready for prayer there is no need of wuduh for prayer as you mentioned that taking shower is more better way to clean ourself is there any hadith that prophet (SAWS) didnt did wudu after or while taking shower & offered salath

Answer:

Sunnah way to perform ghusl

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 1.58a

According to the practice of the Prophet (saws) the correct manner of performing ghusl after making intention to purify oneself and saying ‘Bismillah’ is:

1. wash both hands three times,

2. wash the private parts,

3. make a complete ablution (like the one made for prayer--the Prophet(saws) used to delay washing his feet until the end of his ghusl),

4. rub water through one's hair three times, letting the water reach down to the roots of the hair,

5. pour water over the entire body, begining with the right side, then the left, washing under the armpits, inside the ears, inside the navel, inside the toes and whatever part of the body can be easily rubbed. This account is based on the following report from 'Aishah, the wife of the Prophet (saws): "When the Prophet (saws) took his bath after sexual intercourse, he would begin by washing his hands. Then he would pour water from his right hand to his left and wash his sexual organs, make the ablution for prayer, take some water and put his fingers to the roots of his hair to the extent that he sees that the skin is wet, then pour water over his head three times and then over the rest of his body."

Whenever the Noble Prophet (saws) intended to purify himself after ‘janaba’, it was his practice to perform the ‘ghusl’ in the manner stated above…..and that is the Sunnah.

Your Statements: ….dear brother i am really confused that many places you have answered that prophet (SAWS)`s sunnah was just to take full bath. You mentioned that that was the way prophet (SAWS) use to perform ghusl there is no need to pour water 3 times or100 times while performing ghusl . if so than above hadith is telling something different. plz explain

Respected brother, my answers were in context and in response to questions posed whereby the person had taken a shower or a full bath after being in a state of major impurity and wanted to know whether they were purified or not by their ‘full bath’.

The scholars and the jurists in Islam are unanimous in their opinion that if one takes a ‘full-bath’ with the intention to purify themselves from their state of major impurity, it would suffice. But that in no changes the Sunnah or the exact method used by the Noble Prophet (saws) to purify himself when in the state of major impurity.

The difference between purifying oneself with a mere shower or a full-bath and the Sunnah method of purification is between one which is acceptable and one which is best.

Your Question: …..one more thing is confusing me that just taking normal shower makes us ready for prayer there is no need of wuduh for prayer as you mentioned that taking shower is more better way to clean ourself is there any hadith that prophet (SAWS) didnt did wudu after or while taking shower & offered salath

The normal practice of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was to perform in the ‘ghusl’ in the manner quoted above and related by both Bukhari and Muslim.

Unless the state of ‘wudu’ was violated or broken, to the best of our knowledge, there is absolutely no evidence that the Messenger of Allah (saws) ever performed the ‘wudu’ again to prepare himself for prayer immediately after he (saws) had performed the ‘ghusl’.

The scholars in Islam are unanimous in their opinion that the ‘ghusl’ or full-bath of purification is a bigger method of cleansing that the ‘wudu’, and one who has taken the ‘ghusl’ with the intention to purify oneself need not perform the ‘wudu’ after their ‘ghusl’, unless of course their state of ‘wudu’ is violated or broken. And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
