Could one tell his or her parents if they are performing any kind of shirk or not.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

could one tell his or her parents if they are performing any kind of shirk or not if doing so also hurts them because they are practising it from long time back??

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Shirk of parents

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 39 Surah Zumar verse 65-66:

If you commit ‘shirk’ all your works will be rendered vain and you will be among the losers. Therefore, you should worship Allah Alone, and be among His grateful servants.

Allah says in the Quran: Chapter 4 Surah An-Nisa Verse 48

Shirk (associating other deities with Allah) is the only sin that Allah does not forgive, and He forgives, whomsoever He pleases, sins other than this. For whosoever associates any other partner with Allah, does indeed forge a big lie and commits the most heinous sin

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verse 72:

Whoever commits ‘shirk’ (invoking anything with Allah), Allah shall forbid for him Paradise, and Hell shall be his abode. And for such wrong doers there will be no one to help.

Because the crime and abomination of ‘shirk’ is considered the ultimate sin in the Sight of the Lord….so much so that this abomination of ‘shirk’ is singled out by the Lord Most Just as absolutely unforgivable, and its doers are guaranteed the eternal penalty of Hell Fire in the Hereafter….if one finds one’s loved ones or parents involved in ‘shirk’, it would only be an extension of their love and their concern for their well-being in the Hereafter, that one politely but firmly informs them regarding their act/s of ‘shirk’.

If one fears that their informing their loved ones regarding their ‘shirk’ might cause them some hurt or pain or anguish in the life of this world….they should know with absolute conviction that the hurt, and pain, and anguish this abomination of ‘shirk’ will inevitably bring upon their loved ones in the Hereafter would be unimaginably and considerably greater and more lasting than whatever anguish its informing them might cause them in this world!

If one sees ones loved ones, and especially ones own beloved parents involved in the abomination of ‘shirk’ and remains silent only because one fears revealing the truth about the abomination of their acts of ‘shirk’ might cause them some pain or anguish….then one should prepare oneself to be a mere witness to the eternal, everlasting, and unbearable punishment of the Hell Fire which the Lord Most Majestic has guaranteed to those who die in the state of the abomination of ‘shirk’!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 19 Surah Maryam verses 41-48:

41 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Ibraheem (a.s.): he was a man of Truth, a Prophet.

42 Behold he (Ibraheem (a.s.) said to his father: "O my father! Why worship that which hears not and sees not; and can profit thee nothing?

43 O my father! To me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a Way that is even and straight.

44 O my father! Serve not the Shaytaan: for the Shaytaan is a rebel against (Allah) Most Gracious.

45 O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (Allah) Most Gracious, so that thou become to the Shaytaan, a friend."

46 (His father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods O Ibraheem? If thou forbear not I will indeed stone thee: now get away from me for a good long while!"

47 Ibraheem (a.s.) said: "Peace be on thee: I will pray to my Lord for thy forgiveness: for He is to me Most Gracious.

48 And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah: I will call on my Lord: Perhaps by my prayer to my Lord I shall be not unblessed."

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
