If a child leaves Islam will the parents go to hell?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Hello, There are a lot of issues that surround this question. It was recently brought to my attention that if the child of Muslim parents rejects Islam, the parents (no matter how religious they are) will go to hell. How true is this? Sincerely

Answer:

If a child leaves Islam will the parents go to hell?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

If the righteous parents tried to the best of their ability to educate and invite their children to the Truth of Islam, and in-spite of that their children rejected their invitation; then there will be no blame on the parents in the Court of Allah Subhanah. Each person will be responsible for his own deeds in the Just Court of Allah Subhanah.

A case in point is the unrighteous son of one of the mightiest Prophets of Allah Subhanah, Prophet Noah (a.s.). Noah’s (a.s.) son rejected Allah Subhanah and the invitation of his father, and was condemned and destroyed with the dis-believers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 11 Surah Hud verses 42-43:

42 So the Ark floated with them on the waves (towering) like mountains, and Noah called out to his son who had separated himself (from the rest): "O my son! embark with us, and be not with the Unbelievers!"

43 His son replied: "I will be take myself to some mountain: it will save me from the water." Noah said: "This day nothing can save from the Command of Allah any, but those on whom He hath mercy!" and the waves came between them, and the son was among those overwhelmed in the Flood.

But if the parents did not strive to invite and educate their children to the Truth of Islam, and due to that their children rejected Allah Subhanah and became disbelievers, they will indeed have a severe accounting in the Court of Allah Subhanah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
