One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

As- Salamalaykum wa rahmatullah hi wabarakatuhu

Kindly let me know what does Quran and Hadith say about the parents of our beloved prophet Muhammed (SWS). Were they on the religion of Abraham and pray " None but Allah alone" even though they were in the period when idol worship was rampant in Makkah.

Are the parents of the prophet Muhammed (SWS) and other prophets are the people of the paradise?

Parents of pm

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Kindly let me know what does Quran and Hadith say about the parents of our beloved prophet Muhammed (SWS). Were they on the religion of Abraham and pray " None but Allah alone" even though they were in the period when idol worship was rampant in Makkah.

Sahih Muslim Hadith 398 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

A companion whose father had died in the ‘Days of Ignorance’ came and asked the Prophet (saws): ‘O Messenger of Allah (saws), where is my father?’ The Prophet (saws) replied: ‘He (your father) is in the Hell Fire.’ When the companion turned away, he (the Prophet (saws)) called him back and said: ‘Verily my father and your father are both in the Hell Fire!’

Abu Hurairah reported: "The Prophet (saws) visited his mother's grave and wept, and everyone there wept with him (saws). Then the Prophet (saws) said: 'I sought my Lord's permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not permit me. I then sought permission to visit her grave and He permitted me to visit her grave.’

Related by Muslim, Ahmad, and Abu Dawud.

In light of the above authentic traditions of the Messenger of Allah (saws), it is evident that the parents of the Prophet (saws) did not die on the religion of Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.) nor on the belief of monotheism. So much so, that Allah Subhanah did not even allow Prophet Mohamed (saws) to even supplicate Him for the forgiveness of his own mother!!!

Your Question: Are the parents of the prophet Muhammed (SWS) and other prophets are the people of the paradise?

Time and time again, Allah Subhanah has made it extremely clear in His Glorious Quran that the determination of whether one receives His Mercy or the Punishment will not depend on one’s lineage or blood-relations; but rather it will depend entirely upon the state of one’s belief and the good righteous deeds done by that individual.

Allah Subhanah reveals in His Glorious Quran that some of the closest relatives of the Prophets of Allah who will be condemned to the Eternal and Everlasting tortures of Hell Fire. The most prominent amongst them are:

  1. Azar, the father of Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.), the choicest friend or ‘Khaleel’ of Allah Subhanah.
  2. The wife of Prophet Nuh (a.s.).
  3. The son of Prophet Nuh (a.s.).
  4. The wife of Prophet Lut (a.s.).
  5. Abu Lahab, the paternal uncle of Prophet Mohamed (saws), and also the wife of Abu Lahab.

Being a parent or a close blood-relative of a Prophet of Allah by itself will not entitle one to enter Paradise; but what will determine one’s entry into Paradise or Hell Fire is one’s belief in the Absolute Oneness of Allah Subhanah and the doing of good righteous deeds, and above all the Mercy and Grace of the Lord Most Merciful.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) himself made it very clear to his own family that he (saws) could not save them if they were to disobey Allah Subhanah!

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.294 Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (saws) got up when the Verse of the Quran (26:214): "And warn your tribe of near kindred..." was revealed and he (saws) said, "O Quraish people! Buy yourselves! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him)! O Bani Abdu Manaf! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him)! O 'Abbas (the paternal uncle of the Prophet (saws))! The son of 'Abdul Muttalib! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him)! O Safiya, (the paternal aunt of Allah's Messenger (saws))! I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him)! O Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad (saws)! Ask what you wish from my property, but I cannot save you from Allah (if you disobey Him)!"

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
