i got married some 4 months back and alhamdulillah my wife is 3 and 1/2 month pregnant. but in scanning the doctor said that the baby is not completly formed yet in the womb i.e; the skull and the nervous system has not formed due to lack of folic acid in my wife`s body and sujjested to abort the child as the water will be filled in the stomach and the baby will die in the womb itself. even if he survives he will be born with abnormal head and nervous system and he will not survive 4 too long.so please tell me as if it is abig sin like murder if i go 4 the terminaion of the child? please reply by 2day or 2morrow as i have 2 take the decision by friday. please reply soon

Answer:

Abortion

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Dear and Beloved Brother in Islam, if because of the complications of the unformed baby in the womb there is a severe threat to the very life of the mother, or if in the unfortunate event that the child were to die in the womb and thus there is probable cause to fear that the life of the mother would be endangered, or in any complication it is feared that the life of the pregnant mother is at risk…..the majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that the life of one who is alive (the mother) will be preferred over the unborn life (the baby in the womb). In such an unfortunate situation where only one of the two lives can be saved, the majority of the scholars and jurists are of the opinion that the life of the mother should be saved and the unborn baby be aborted. It is highly recommended and preferred that before taking such a drastic decision to abort the unborn life, one must not rely on the opinion of only one doctor, but get a proper opinion from a panel of qualified doctors. If one chooses to abort the life of the unborn baby which has become a threat to the very life of its mother, the scholars are of the opinion that such a decision will find excuse in the Sight of Allah and there will be no sin on the mother or the guardians who have been forced to make this unfortunate and drastic decision.

But to abort the unborn child simply because it is feared it might be born deformed, or that it is feared that he might not survive long after its birth, etc. when there is absolutely no fear or risk to the mother’s life would neither be lawful nor excusable but rather a huge and heinous sin of murder in the Sight of Allah Subhanah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
