Please could you explain the Ayat in Chapter 40 Surah Mumin verse 18 and in particular the line:

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Bro Burhan,

ASSALAAM ALAIKUM!

Please could you explain the Ayat in Chapter 40 Surah Mumin verse 18 and in particular the line: "and the wrong-doers will neither have any kindly friend nor any `shafaa` who may be listened to". Does this mean, on the other hand, that those who do righteous deeds may have a friend or shufaa?

Thanks and regards

Answer:

Wali friend intercerssion

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Please could you explain the Ayat in Chapter 40 Surah Mumin verse 18 and in particular the line: "and the wrong-doers will neither have any kindly friend nor any `shafaa` who may be listened to".

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 40 Surah Mumin verse 18: Warn them of the Day that is (ever) drawing near when the hearts will (come) right up to the throats to choke (them); no intimate friend nor intercessor will the wrongdoers have who could be listened to.

The essence, content, and substance of the verse of Surah Mumin is often repeated all over the Glorious Quran by the Lord All-Mighty to thoroughly engrave the right context of the enormity, horror and terror that will be abound on that Tumultuous Day of Judgment!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 22 Surah Hajj verses 1-3:

1 O mankind! Fear your Lord! For the convulsion of the Hour (of Judgment) will be a thing terrible!

2 The Day ye shall see it every mother giving suck shall forget her suckling-babe, and every pregnant female shall drop her load (unformed): thou shalt see mankind as in a drunken riot, (but) they would not be drunk: but dreadful indeed will be the Wrath of Allah!

3 And yet among men there are such as dispute about Allah without knowledge and follow every evil one obstinate in rebellion!

The disbelievers and especially the polytheists had developed a very different concept of the Day of Judgment, whereby they believed that their self-invented ‘god’ or ‘deity’ would be their intercessor and friend, and if perchance for any reason their deeds were not enough to attain success in the Hereafter, the self-invented deities and ‘gods’ they worshipped and invoked all their lives would be present to save them from any and all trouble! This incorrect and utter false hopes on their self-invented deities and gods is what had eluded them from the obedience and submission to their One and Only Lord Creator….and one will find that all over the Quran Allah Subhanah warns them regarding the results of their false hopes, whims, and fancies.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anam verse 94: (And Allah will say), “So, you have come before Us all alone, as We created you at first. Now, you have left behind all that We gave you in the world. Now We do not see with you those ‘shufa’a’ (intercessors), who, you believed, had a share in moulding your destinies! All the relations between you and them have been cut off, and all those, in whom you trusted, have left you in the lurch.”

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 48: And guard yourselves against the Day when no one shall avail anyone else; nor shall ‘shafa’a’ (intercession) be accepted from anyone; nor shall anyone be acquitted for any amount of ransom; nor shall the guilty ones be helped from any quarter.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 40 Surah Mumin verse 47-48: Then imagine the time when these people will be disputing with one another in Hell. The weak ones will say to the haughty ones, “We were your followers! Now, can you save us from some part of our punishment in Hell?” The haughty ones will say, “We are all in the same state here, and Allah has already passed judgment between His servants.”

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 41 Surah Ha Meem Sajdah verse 47-48:Then on the Day when Allah will call out to the people asking, “Where are those associates of Mine?” They will say, “We have submitted: there is none of us to bear witness to that.” At that time, all those deities whom they used to invoke before this, shall be lost to them, and they will realize that they have no refuge.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraaf verses 52-53: We have brought to these people a Book which gives details based on knowledge and which is a guidance and blessing for those who believe. Now, are these people waiting for anything other than the consequence of which they have been warned in the Book? When the consequence will come before them, those very people who aforetime had disregarded it, will say, “Indeed, the Messenger of our Lord had come with the Truth. Shall we have, then, any ‘shufaa’ who will intercede for us? Or could we be sent back that we might do deeds different from those we did before?” They have, indeed, incurred heavy loss upon themselves, and all the false things they had invented have forsaken them today.

The disbelievers did not believe in the concept of the Hereafter, and the polytheists invented their own ‘insurance’ in the form of their deities and false gods, and spent their lives worshipping and invoking them in the belief that these false hopes would be able to help them in the Hereafter! Had they only believed in the warning accorded to them in Truth by their Lord Creator and His Messenger (saws), and understood the true concept of the Hereafter, and submitted their lives and their will in obedience to the Commands of their Lord Who Created them, they would never ever have fallen into this abyss of a trap and delusion invented by their accursed enemy, the Shaytaan!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 14 Surah Ibraheem verse 22: And the Shaytaan will say when the matter (on the Day) is decided : "It was Allah Who gave you a promise of Truth: I too promised, but I failed in my promise to you. I had no authority over you except to call you, but ye listened to me: then reproach not me but reproach your own souls! I cannot listen to your cries nor can ye listen to mine. I reject your former act in associating me with Allah. For wrongdoers there must be a Grievous Penalty."

The false hopes that the disbelievers and polytheists put on their self-invented deities and gods made them arrogant in the life of the transitory world, and they rejected the guidance and call of Allah and His Messenger (saws) to believe in their Lord Creator and do righteous good deeds! At long last, when these arrogant disbelievers see for themselves that whatever their Lord Creator promised them to be the Truth, they will have nothing but dismay, disgust, regrets, and the eternal abode of punishment as their lot!!!

Your Question: Does this mean, on the other hand, that those who do righteous deeds may have a friend or shufaa?

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 257 (part): Allah is the Friend, Patron, Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 55-56:

55 Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger and the believers, those who establish regular prayers and regular charity and they bow down humbly (in worship).

56 As to those who turn (for friendship) to Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers; it is the fellowship of Allah that must certainly triumph.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 41 Surah Haa Meem verses 26-31:

26 The unbelievers say: "Listen not to this Qur'an but talk at random in the midst of its (reading) that ye may gain the upper hand!"

27 But We will certainly give the unbelievers a taste of a Severe Penalty and We will requite them for the worst of their deeds.

28 Such is the requital of the enemies of Allah: the Fire! Therein will be for them their Eternal Home: a (fit) requital for that they were wont to reject Our Signs.

29 And the unbelievers will say: "O Our Lord! Show us those among Jinns and men who misled us: we shall crush them beneath our feet so that they become the vilest (before all)."

30 In the case of those who say "Our Lord is Allah" and further stand straight and steadfast, the Angels descend on them (from time to time): "Fear ye not!" (they say) "nor grieve! But receive the Glad Tidings of the Garden (of Bliss) the which ye were promised!

31 We are your friends, patrons, protectors in this life and in the Hereafter: therein shall ye have all that your souls shall desire; therein shall ye have all that ye ask for!

32 A hospitable gift from The One, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!"

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verse 69: All who obey Allah and the Messenger are in the company of those on whom is the Grace of Allah: the Prophets, the sincere (lovers of Truth), the witnesses (or martyrs), and the righteous! Aah! What a beautiful fellowship!

Without an iota of a doubt, it is the solemn Promise of the Lord Most High that to those who believed and did righteous good deeds …. Allah Subhanah, the Lord Exalted and High Himself, His Prophets, His Angels, and the righteous believers will be their true friends and patrons; and from His Grace and Mercy the Lord Most Merciful will admit His believing slaves into the fellowship and company of amongst His Prophets, the Truthful, the Martyrs, and the Rigtheous! Aah! What a Beautiful fellowship, and what a beautiful companionship!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 39 Surah Zumar verses 44: What! Have they taken besides Allah others as ‘shofa’a’ (intercessors)? Say to them, “Will they intercede even if they have no power whatever nor understanding?” Say, Shafa’a is wholly in the Power of Allah Alone!”. His is the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned.

And for these fortunate people, none other than their Lord Most Exalted Most High will be their Intercessor; for ‘Shafaa’ or intercession will wholly be in the Power of the Lord Exalted Alone! He, the Most Exalted Himself will Decide who are those who deserve intercession, and He, the Most Exalted is He, will Decide, Appoint, Choose and Bestow upon whom He Wills, the Ultimate Honor to intercede on behalf of His believing slaves!

Allah is our witness brother, even the best of friends and patrons will be foes and staunch enemies of one another, except those who believed and did righteous good deeds in accordance with guidance of their Lord and His Messenger (saws); for they will indeed be the closest friends of one another for eternity!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 43 Surah Zukhruf verse 67: Friends on that Day will be foes one to another, except the Righteous.

Such will be the Mercy and Grace of Allah Subhanah, that if perchance two believers had any misunderstanding or lurking sense of injury or any malice towards each other in the life of the transitory world, The Lord Most Gracious shall completely remove any sense of spite or ill-feeling they might have had against each other, and bond them in the eternal relationship of brotherhood and friendship!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 15 Surah Hijr verses 45-49:

45 The righteous (will be) amid Gardens and fountains (of clear-flowing water).

46 (Their greeting will be): "Enter ye here in Peace and Security."

47 And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity).

48 There no sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave.

49 (O Prophet (saws)): Tell My servants that I am indeed the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

May Allah Subhanah guide you and us to do deeds that will enable us to be amongst those fortunate and righteous slaves who will be eternal friends to one another in Paradise; and save you and us from doing deeds that might take us towards those who will be everlasting enemies in the Hell Fire! Ameen.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
