One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamu Alaikkum Wa Rahmathullahi Wa Barakathuhu

Dear Brother

Whenever Allah says about Heaven in the Holy Quran, He used water falls and rivers and whenever he is saying about hell, he used Fire. Can you explain me the reason?

Answer:

Why water and greenery in paradise and fire in hell

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Ale Imraan verse 14-15:

14 Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: women, and sons, heaped-up hoards of gold and silver, branded horses (or vehicles), and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this worldly life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (to return to).

15 Say: ‘Shall I give you glad tidings of things far better than those? For the righteous are Gardens in nearness to their Lord, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their Eternal Home with companions pure (and holy); and the Good Pleasure of Allah.’

It is the inherent and the very nature of man that he loves and covets for himself huge expanse of well-tilled land, greenery, fruit-bearing trees, rivers and waterfalls, etc….and it is placed in the same nature of man that he despises and fears the elements of unbearable heat and fire.

The incentives of the Eternal Gardens of Paradise and the fear of the everlasting punishments and the unbearable torture of Hell Fire are just a basic overview of the contrast which the Lord has portrayed for the life of the Hereafter……so that those who fear Allah and His Day of Tribunal may strive for Paradise and warn those who do not fear Allah regarding their inevitable penalty and humiliation.

The Truth brother is that the rewards of Paradise are such that no eyes has ever seen, no ears have ever heard, and no human mind has even ever imagined…and it is safe to assume that the penalty and the punishment and the humiliation of the dwellers of Hell would be likewise in contrast!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 32 Surah Sajdah verse 17:

No living being knows what comfort of the eyes has been kept hidden from them, as a recompense (in Paradise) for their (righteous) deeds!

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.467 Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "Allah, The High and Exalted He is, said, 'I have prepared for My pious slaves things (in Paradise) which have never been seen by an eye, or heard by an ear, or (even) imagined by a human being!'

If the Lord Most Gracious would have revealed what else (in addition to what a human being covets and loves in his inherent and innate nature) would be made available to them in Paradise, neither would man be able to comprehend it, nor would it serve as an incentive for one to strive towards it!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 50 Surah Qaaf verse 35:

There they (the fortunate men and women of Paradise) shall have all that they will desire, and We have with Us yet more for them!

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
