Answer:

The covering of the Kaaba

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Q-1: Since when the Kaba is being covered

There are a few historians who opine that the ‘Kiswa’ or the covering of the Holy Kaaba was first introduced by Prophet Ismail (a.s.) himself, while a few others are of the opinion that the great-great grandfather of Prophet Mohamed (saws), Adnan bin Ad first introduced the ‘Kiswa’.

The absolute majority of the historians are of the opinion that the ‘Kiswa’ was first introduced as the covering of the Holy Kaaba by Tabban Asaad, the pagan king of Yemen before the advent of Prophet Mohamed (saws)….and Allah Alone Knows Best.

Q-2: whaat is the cost of it.

A special factory is established in the city of Makkah by the current guardians of the Sacred House to manufacture the ‘Kiswa’ which covers the Holy Kaaba. The cloth of the ‘Kiswa’ is reportedly 658 sq. meters of pure silk, weighs 670 kgs, and a 120kgs of pure gold and silver twine is used to inscribe the Verses of the Holy Quran on the cloth.

The cost of making the ‘Kiswa’ is reported to be approximately 17 million Saudi Riyals or US$4.6 million.

Q-3: Does all muslim countries take part in making it.

To the best of our knowledge, the current guardians of the Sacred Mosques, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia alone have taken the responsibility of making the ‘Kiswa’ and no other muslim nations take part in its making….and Allah Alone Knows Best.

Q-4: What happens with the old Kaba cover some part of its gold and silver being reused or given away to poors or people of the country

It is reported that during the Caliphate of Hadrat Umar ibn Al-Khattab (r.a.), he would order that the removed ‘Kiswa’ be cut into several small pieces and distributed amongst the pilgrims who would use them as a shelter from the heat of Makkah.

In present times, every year when the old ‘Kiswa’ is removed, it is cut into small pieces and gifted by the guardians of the Sacred Mosque to visiting Muslim foreign dignitaries, organizations, and or believers of their choice. And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
