One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Salaam aleikum

I have heard that a marriage is blessed if it takes place at a mosque. My daughter is due to get married and I would like her to be present at the nikkah but that is not possible if it takes place at a mosque. I would like to know the islamic position ie.should the bride hear her own nikkah?
An early reply will be appreciated.

Thank You

Answer:

Nikaah in mosque blessed

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Statement: I have heard that a marriage is blessed if it takes place at a mosque

There is absolutely no condition or obligation in Shariah that a ‘nikaah’ must be held in a ‘masjid’; nor is there anything in the Quran or the authentic and established Sunnah to believe that a ‘nikaah’ performed in the ‘masjid’ is better or has more blessings than one which is performed out of the ‘masjid’!! If one wishes or it is convenient for them that the ‘nikaah’ of their daughter is performed in the ‘masjid’, it is perfectly fine and acceptable in Shariah; and if one wishes or is convenient for them to perform the ‘nikaah’ at a place other than the ‘masjid’….that too is perfectly fine and acceptable in Shariah.

Your Question: My daughter is due to get married and I would like her to be present at the nikkah but that is not possible if it takes place at a mosque.

Although the presence of the father or a male mehram guardian of the bride would suffice to fulfill the requirements of ‘nikaah’, the mother is well within her rights in Islam to choose to be present when the ‘nikaah’ of her daughter is being performed, if indeed she wishes to do so.

Your Question: I would like to know the islamic position ie.should the bride hear her own nikkah?
Although it would suffice if the father or the male mehram guardian, who are entrusted with the authority by the bride to give her hand in marriage, hear and are satisfied with the conditions of the contract of ‘nikaah’, there is absolutely no harm or restriction in Shariah if the bride herself wishes to be present or hear her own ‘nikaah’; provided all the conditions of ‘hijaab’ amongst the non-mehram men present for the ‘nikaah’ are duely honored.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.101 Narrated by Aisha

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "It is essential to have the consent of a virgin (for her marriage).” I said, "A virgin feels shy." The Prophet (saws) said, "Her silence means her consent."

The fact that the Messenger of Allah (saws) declared it essential to have the consent of the bride to her marriage, and the fact that the bashfulness of some brides might not allow her to give her ‘verbal’ consent….. clearly implies that it is perfectly acceptable in Shariah for the bride to hear her own ‘nikaah’ being performed.

What is of paramount importance in Shariah is that the Judge or ‘Qadi’ performing the ‘nikaah’ is absolutely convinced that the bride consents to her ‘nikaah’; if the ‘Qadi’ has any doubt or has reason to fear that the bride does not consent to the ‘nikaah’ or the conditions of the contract of ‘nikaah’, he is well within his authority to demand that the bride gives her approval to her ‘nikaah’ in his presence.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
