Can women cut their nails during menses?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

Can women cut their nails during menses?

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Restriction menses menstruation

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 222:

They ask about the monthly periods (of the women). Say (O Prophet), “It is a state of impurity; so keep apart from the women during their monthly periods and do not go near them (sexual intercourse) until they are clean.”

The only things that a believing woman experiencing her natural menses is prohibited from doing in Shariah are:

  1. The actual act of sexual intercourse.
  2. Offering ‘salaah’.
  3. Observing fasts.
  4. Performing the ‘tawaaf’ of the Sacred House.
  5. Entering a masjid.
  6. Touching the Glorious Quran.

Other than the above listed six restriction the believing woman who is experiencing her natural menses may do everything else she would do when in the state of purity, including the clipping or cutting of her nails.

There is absolutely nothing in the Shariah which prohibits a believing women from cutting or clipping her nails when in the state of menses, if she wishes to do so.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
