One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

My question is regarding Taraweeh prayer. I have been praying at various different mosques throughout this month. Initially, I was praying at one of my two local mosques, then I went to Coventry and prayed in a different mosque for 3 days. Then I returned and switched to my other local mosque. I was wondering that is there any sin in changing the mosque for Taraweeh in this manner?

Answer:

Change mosque for tarawih

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2208 Narrated by Al-Bara' ibn Azib

Al-Bara' heard Allah's Messenger (saws) say, "Beautify the Qur'an with your voices, for the beautiful voice increases the beauty of the Qur'an."

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2209 Narrated by Tawus

Tawus said that the Prophet (saws) was asked who had the most beautiful voice for the Qur'an and whose recitation was most beautiful, he (saws) replied, 'The one whom you think when you hear him recite that he fears Allah."

It is only natural and a sign of one’s faith that one loves to hear the Quran being recited beautifully; and if your intention to try different mosques in your area was so that you may offer your ‘tarawih’ prayers and thus listen to the Quran that was recited the most beautifully, there is absolutely no harm and no sin in the least.

Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib reported from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (saws) said, "You should not undertake a special journey to visit any place (of worship) other than the three Mosques: the Sacred Mosque of Makkah, this mosque of mine (in Madinah), and Al-Aqsa Mosque (of Jerusalem)."

Related by Bukhari, Muslim, and Abu Daw'ud.

What is absolutely forbidden in Islam is that one undertake a special journey to visit a place of worship or a mosque (other than the three mosques listed above), assuming that their worship there is more meritorious or earns more rewards than his worship anywhere else. But if one changes or tries different mosques in one’s area only so that he may pray ‘tarawih’ behind an ‘imam’ who has the most beautiful voice so that one’s ‘khushu’ or sincerity in one’s prayer is increased, there is absolutely no harm and no sin in the least!

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,
