Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I work in a business where I am a tailor. People come to make their pants short. So I do I make their pants usually to the shoes, so it doesn`t drag on the ground. In a hadeeth the prophet(sas) said below the ankles is in the fire. Is it haram if I make their pants pass below the ankle?

I also fix holes and tear places on the clothes. Women bring me a pant to fix and a clothing that you can see her body. Can I do these clothes?

Another question

Men bring me silk clothing and is it alright to fix them too?

Another question

My friend is a barbor and he cuts people`s hair fade like alot of hair on the top and little hair on the sides. I know it is haram to cut one part and leave another because the prophet sas said to cut all or leave all. SO it haram for him to cut people fade?

Answer:

Tailor and barber

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, when something is declared unlawful in Islam (eg. Flesh of swine, prostitution, gambling, alcohol, riba, etc.); then it would be absolutely unlawful for the believers to deal or transact business in such products and services.

But when something is lawful in its essence in Shariah (tailoring, cutting of hair by barber, etc.), then the responsibility is solely upon the customer and not the vendor of how he wishes his clothes to be tailored, or his hair being cut, etc.

Your Question: Is it haram if I make their pants pass below the ankle? I also fix holes and tear places on the clothes. Women bring me a pant to fix and a clothing that you can see her body. Can I do these clothes?

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, a tailor is not the guardian or ruler of society who is empowered because of his position to implement the laws of Shariah upon others living in the society!

The responsibility of implementing the laws of Shariah are on the individual who comes to the tailor; not the tailor himself! There is absolutely no responsibility on the tailor if he fulfils the instructions of his customers and makes their pants below their ankles; nor is there any responsibility on the tailor if he makes the clothes according to the women customer’s choice, even if when worn it reveals a part of her body. The tailor is not the guardian of his customers, nor will he be held responsible for the choices his customers make.

Your Question: SO it haram for him to cut people fade?

As long as the barber (or the tailor) himself does not transgress any of the boundaries of Shariah like touching or cutting the hair of non-mehram women, etc., he is not responsible for the choice of style made by the customer.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
