Who can give azan to a new born baby?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalam-u-alaikum brother!

First of all I would like to thank you for a great site and the job you are doing. It gives us a lot of knowledge and answers to our questions.

I would like to know who can give azan to a new born baby? Can a person who does not pray five times a day do that or should it be an imam?

Thanks & Assalam-u-alaikum

Answer:

Who can give adhaan to baby

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

May Allah Subhanah reward you with the best of this world and the Hereafter for your kind comments of encouragement for our humble efforts in the propagation of the Truth. If our humble and modest efforts have helped even one brother or sister get closer to Allah and His Deen of Truth, then we would consider ourselves indeed fortunate to have been given this opportunity by the Lord Most Merciful to serve in His Cause. We hope, beg, and pray the Merciful Lord accepts our humble and weak efforts, forgives us our shortcomings, and saves you, us, and all the believers from the torment of the Hell Fire. Ameen.

Your Question: I would like to know who can give azan to a new born baby?

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 5086 Narrated byAbu Rafi'

I saw the Messenger of Allah (saws) uttering the call to prayer (Adhan) in the ear of al-Hasan ibn Ali when Fatimah gave birth to him.

Although the right to announce the ‘Adhaan’ in the ears of the new-born is the right of the baby’s parents, there is absolutely no harm if they wish to honor anyone amongst their loved one’s to do so.

Your Question: Can a person who does not pray five times a day do that or should it be an imam?
Whether or not one observes his obligatory prayers strictly is neither a criteria nor a condition for being eligible to announce the ‘adhaan’ in the new-born’s ear; for that is something between the believer and his All-Knowing, All-Seeing Lord. Neither is there a condition in Islam that only an ‘Imam’ or religious scholar may announce the adhaan in the new-borns ear.

The parents of the new-born have the right to announce the adhaan in their new-born baby’s ears themselves or honor anyone they wish to do so.

What is of paramount importance and a preferred Sunnah is that the adhaan is declared shortly after its birth in the ears of the new-born, born of a believing family so that the first words the new-born hears at the start of his journey of life are the Praise and Glorification of the Lord Creator and the testification of belief and faith.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
