They found a dead woman in India and do not know whether she was a Muslim or a disbeliever; should they offer the funeral prayer for her?

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
As-Salaamu-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:
We found a dead woman in our city in India, and there is nothing to indicate whether she was a Muslim or a disbeliever. Should we offer the funeral prayer for her?
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Praise be to Allah

We put this question to our Shaykh, ‘Abd ar-Rahmaan al-Barraak (may Allah preserve him) and he replied:

If there is no sign on her to indicate that she was a Muslim, then the ruling should be according to the town in which they found her. If most of the people of the town are Muslim, then she is a Muslim, otherwise the funeral prayer should not be offered for her.

And Allah knows best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah's Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
