One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I wanted to ask this very important question. I have been asked by a nonmuslim to quote the source of the hadith which has that a jewish woman used to throw garbage in the path of PROPHET MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.H) and that one day when she was not there he went to visit her, she had fallen sick. Please this is urgent as that nonmuslim brother has challenged me saying that such hadith are untrue and borrowed from stories of other people. Infact, when I went on the net to find out the source of this hadith, it was almost as if I had opened a pendora box. I got to face so many comments from nonmuslims saying that this hadith has no authentic sanad and that it has simply been concocted by muslims to create a good image of the beloved PROPHET MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.H). Not that I am anywhere affected by that crap but I want to give an answer to all those who are spilling such filth. Also. if such a hadith is not found, will it prove that this is a concocted piece of praise by some muslims who? please enlighten me and help me by searching the source of this hadith for me. I hope to hear from you soon..Please quote the source and if possible the hadith as well. I am waiting fro your reply.....

Answer:

Hadith of woman garbage on prophet(saws)

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Respected Sister in Islam, although the record of this particular incident is found in almost all the books of ‘Seerah’ or biography of the Prophet (saws) and is oft-repeated by the muslims, to the best of our knowledge there is no record of this specific incident in any of the authentic and established Books of Sunnah. And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chatper 68 Surah Qalam verses 3-4:

3 Nay verily for thee (O Mohamed (saws)) is a Reward unfailing:

4 And thou (O Prophet (saws) stands) on an exalted standard of character.

If someone has invented and concocted the incident from themselves and attributed it to the Prophet (saws), they shall have their due from their Lord on the Day of Judgment; and if the incident is indeed true, then it is well within the exalted standard of character of the Noble Prophet of Allah (saws).

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
