One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalam mu alaikum Brother,

I have some questions.

1.  I heard from my friend that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has once said that don't eat banana's   in the night. If someone give u lot of money still don't eat. Is it true.

2.  I heard from many people and also I read that while praying there should not be picture of living thing in front of u or u can't wear any cloth with picture of living thing also now my question is if so then plants, trees are also living thing then why we put these photos everywhere.

3.  Our most of alims are saying that to capture photos from camera is prohibited but the hadiths is about the tasveer which comes from word tasavur that means painting of that person which he never saw but comes in his mind.

Hope you will give me the answer with Quran and Hadith.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Q-1:  I heard from my friend that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has once said that don't eat banana's   in the night. If someone give u lot of money still don't eat. Is it true.

The ‘banana’ fruit is obviously from amongst the vegetation kingdom, and all produce of the vegetation kingdom is absolutely lawful for the believers to consume.

To the best of our knowledge there is absolutely no mention of the prohibition of the banana fruit found in the authentic and established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 16 Surah Nahl verses 116-117:

116 But say not for any false thing that your tongues may put forth "This is ‘halaal’ and this is ‘haraam’" so as to ascribe false things to Allah. For those who ascribe false things to Allah will never prosper.

117 (In such falsehood) is but a paltry profit; but they will have a most grievous Penalty.

The right to declare anything lawful or unlawful is the Sole Right of Allah Subhanah and His Messenger (saws) alone. Respected sister, just as it would be a an extremely grave and heinous sin to declare lawful what Allah and His Messenger (saws) have declared ‘haraam’ (flesh of swine, alcohol, etc.)….it would be an equally grave and heinous sin to declare as ‘haraam’ what Allah and His Messenger (saws) have not declared as unlawful.

Your friend who says that the banana fruit was prohibited as food for the believers by the Messenger of Allah (saws) should be asked to provide the evidence for her claim from the Quran and/or the Sunnah. And if she cannot, she should either turn towards her Lord Creator in ‘taubah’ and seek sincere forgiveness for ascribing a falsehood to the Messenger of Allah (saws)….or else she should await an extremely severe accounting in the Presence of her Lord Most High on that Inevitable and Tumultuous Day of Judgment!

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.667 Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr

The Prophet (saws) said ‘Whoever tells a lie on me intentionally, will surely take his place in the (Hell) Fire."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.109 Narrated by Salama

I heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "Whoever (intentionally) ascribes to me what I have not said then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.217 Narrated by Abu Huraira

The Prophet (saws) said, "Whoever intentionally ascribes something to me falsely, he will surely take his place in the (Hell) Fire.”

Q-2A:  I heard from many people and also I read that while praying there should not be picture of living thing in front of u

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.834 Narrated by Muslim

We were with Masruq at the house of Yasar bin Numair. Masruq saw pictures on his terrace and said, "I heard 'Abdullah saying that he heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "The people who will receive the severest punishment from Allah will be the (animate) picture makers.' "

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.841 Narrated by Abu Talha

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house where there are (animate) pictures."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.845 Narrated by Abu Juhaifa

that he had bought a slave whose profession was cupping. The Prophet forbade taking the price of blood, and the price of a dog, and the earnings of a prostitute, and cursed the one who took or gave (Riba') usury, and the lady who tattooed others or got herself tattooed, and the (animate) picture-maker.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.450 Narrated by Abu Salim

Once Gabriel promised the Prophet (saws) that he would visit him, but Gabriel did not come, and later on he said, "We Angels, do not enter a house which contains a (animate) picture, or a dog."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.448 Narrated by Abu Talha

I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."

In light of the above quoted guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws), it is prohibited for a believer who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day to make or display animate pictures in their homes, leave alone offer prayers unto one’s Lord Creator with the unlawful animate picture displayed in front of them!

Q-2B: …or u can't wear any cloth with picture of living thing

When Angels of Mercy do not enter a home which has a display of animate pictures, it would only be akin to piety and righteousness that way believer who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day should abstain from wearing clothes with animate pictures displayed on it.

Question 2C: ….also now my question is if so then plants, trees are also living thing then why we put these photos everywhere.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 3.428 Narrated by Said bin Abu Al Hasan

While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Messenger (saws). I heard him (saws) saying, 'Whoever makes a (animate) picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures, I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."

What is specifically prohibited is pictures of animate objects (human beings and animals)….there is absolutely no harm in making or displaying pictures of inanimate objects (vegetation kingdom), if indeed one wishes to do so.

Question-3:  Our most of alims are saying that to capture photos from camera is prohibited but the hadiths is about the tasveer which comes from word tasavur that means painting of that person which he never saw but comes in his mind.

Because the concept of cameras, videos, photography, etc. are a technological development of man after the establishment of the Quran and the Sunnah, there is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars regarding its permissibility. The majority of the scholars of Islam are of the opinion that photography or videography in itself is not forbidden in Islam, because it provides nothing but an exact reflection and mirror image of the creation of the Supreme Creator as opposed to paintings, or images, or the sculptures of an animate objects, where there is a possibility that man can make an imaginary addition/subtraction to the original creation of the Creator, and are thus strictly forbidden in Islam.

The majority of the scholars are also of the opinion that a believer must not decorate or display in his house any pictures, images, idols, or photos of animate objects, as in light of the several narrations of the Messenger of Allah (saws), the Angels of Mercy do not enter a house where there are pictures (of animate objects).

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
