Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Brothers Assalaamualaikum,

I have been living here in Malaysia for the past three years and i have been shocked to find most no.of people living here abstaining from offering the sunnat salat.

They pray only fard.and the same they do in wudu.

Only follow the fard of the wudhu.

Please let me know is it okay only to offer the fard of the 5 time prayers and the only the fard of the wudhu.

secondly i have seen the so called and so named muslim girl/woman here sporting skirts and so shameless clothing and then you can watch them going to the mussalahs to offer prayers, which you can find at every nook and corner out here in Malaysia.

what i want to know are their prayers valid when they openly defy the dressing codes set up by allah SWT.

Astagfirullahalazeem, they even make fun of the month of Ramadhan exposing their clevages and mid riffs and proudly say i am fasting.

Answer:

Offer only fard prayers

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: Please let me know is it okay only to offer the fard of the 5 time prayers and the only the fard of the wudhu.

First and foremost brother, allow us to clarify the different types of prayers: Fard, Nafl, and Sunnah:

Fard prayers: These are the five obligatory prayers at their appointed times of the day. If one prays them, he will earn a huge reward from Allah Subhanah; and if one does not pray them, there will be a severe accounting and punishment.

Nafl prayers: These are the voluntary or extra prayers. If one prays them, he will earn a huge reward from Allah Subhanah; and if one does not pray them, there is no sin.

Sunnah prayers: These are the Nafl or voluntary prayers which were prayed by the Messenger of Allah (saws), and thus they become his (saw’s) Sunnah for us. If one prays them, he will earn a huge reward from Allah Subhanah; and if one does not pray them, there is no sin. The most that can be said of one who does not pray the Sunnah prayers is that he lost a great opportunity to earn huge rewards from Allah Subhanah.

Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet (saws) said: "The first thing that the people will be called to account for on the Day of Resurrection will be the prayers. Our Lord will Say to the Angels although He knows better: 'Look into the ‘salah’ of my servant to see if he observed it perfectly or been negligent in it.’ So if he observed it perfectly it will be recorded to his credit, but if he had been negligent in it in any way, Allah will Say: ‘See if My servant has any supererogatory prayers.’ Then if he has any supererogatory prayers, Allah would Say: ‘Make up the deficiency in My servant's obligatory prayer with his supererogatory prayers.' Thereafter all his actions will be examined in like manner"

Dear and beloved brother, if one only observes what Allah Subhanah has made obligatory upon them in the deen, they will be absolved of their obligatory duties in the Court of the Lord Most Gracious Most Merciful; the extra ‘Nawafils’ and ‘Sunnahs’ or voluntary deeds of worship that one does will help in making up the deficiencies in one’s obligatory worships and in gaining extra rewards from the Lord Most Gracious.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.44 Narrated by Talha bin Ubaidullah

A man from Najd with unkempt hair came to Allah's Messenger (saws) and we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he came near and then we came to know that he was asking about Islam. Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night ." The man asked, "Is there any more (praying)?" Allah's Messenger (saws) replied, "No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil (supererogatory) prayers (you may)." Allah's Messenger (saws) further said to him: "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man asked, "Is there any more fasting?" Allah's Messenger (saws) replied, "No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you may.)" Then Allah's Messenger (saws) further said to him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." The man asked, "Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?" Allah's Messenger (saws) replied, "No, unless you want to give alms of your own." And then that man retreated saying, "By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this." Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise)."

Your Question: what i want to know are their prayers valid when they openly defy the dressing codes set up by allah SWT.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 59:

O Prophet, enjoin your wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons. It is expected that they will thus be recognized, and not molested. Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 24 Surah An-Noor verse 31:

And O Prophet, enjoin the believing women to restrain their gaze and guard their private parts and not to display their ‘zeenata hunna’ (beauty, adornment, etc.) except that which is displayed of itself, and to draw their veils over their bosoms and not to display their ‘zeenata hunna’ (beauty, adornment, etc.) except before their husbands, their fathers, the fathers of their husbands, their sons and the sons of their husbands, their brothers, their brothers sons, their sisters’ sons, their female associates, and those in their possession and male attendants incapable of sexual desire, and those boys who have not yet attained knowledge of sexual matters. Also forbid them to stamp their feet on the ground lest their hidden ornaments should be displayed.

Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn 'Umar and 'Aishah report that the Prophet (saws) said, "Allah does not accept the prayer of an adult woman unless she is wearing a ‘jilbaab’ (khimar, hijab, outer-cover)."

Related by Bukhari and Muslim.

The dress code of a believing woman when offering her prayers is exactly the same as when she is in the presence of non-mehram men, even if she is praying absolutely alone…..for the Messenger of Allah (saws) said that Allah does not accept the prayer of an adult woman unless she adorns herself in a ‘jilbaab’.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
