Please let me know how a person can fast in the month of Ramadan, if he has a problem of bleeding gums throughout. He fears that this condition will be there even after Ramadan. Answer:

Bleeding gums in ramadan fast

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

There are basically five things which will break or invalidate the fast:

  1. Eating
  2. Drinking
  3. Sexual intercourse
  4. voluntary semen discharge
  5. the menstruation of the woman while fasting

The scholars and jurists in Islam are unanimous in their opinion that the swallowing of one’s own saliva, or even the swallowing of the bleeding of one’s gums do not effect the validity of one’s fast in any way whatsoever. Thus if one has a medical condition whereby one’s gums are bleeding, and one swallows the bleeding along with their saliva, there is absolutely no harm as such swallowing does not effect the validity of one’s fast in any way whatsoever.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
