One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Can one take any type of injection during fasting if it is reauired. will it break the fast or not. please advise.

Answer:

Fast and injection

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 3.134b

Topic: Fasting, any type of injection

Injections do not break the fast whether they are for feeding the person or just medicine. It does not matter if the injection was intraveinous or underneath the skin. It also does not matter if what was injected reaches the stomach, as it does not reach the stomach through the customary manner (that food and drink does).

There are five things which will break or invalidate the fast:

  1. Eating
  2. Drinking
  3. Sexual intercourse
  4. voluntary semen discharge
  5. the menstruation of the woman while fasting

The absolute majority of the scholars are of the opinion that if one in need of medical attention takes an injection, it would not invalidate his fast in any way.

Some scholars are of the opinion that the taking of injections for no valid medical reason, but only of vitamins or minerals to make their fast easier on them would invalidate their fast. They argue that a believer who keeps a fast, abstaining from the halaal rizk which his Lord has provided him to earn the pleasure of the Merciful Lord, should know that his Lord is indeed The All-Knowing, All-Wise and well aware of the condition of each in His creation. It would indeed be absolutely inappropriate and unrighteous of a believer to take an injection of vitamins and minerals supplements, etc. for no other valid medical reason, but only so that it would become easy for him to fast! And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
