Tell me is there any option or term called as "kasr" namaz in Islam.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamoalikum brother Burhan,

May allah bless u and ur team for the noble work you are doing in the sight of Islam by guiding the millions of people through out the globe.

I am connected to your website since a long time. actuallly since last so many days i am confused regarding one question for prayers.

I need to seek right guidance from your side is that right now i am leaving in East Afrcia and my workplace and my residence is quite far from the mosque something around 1 hour journey in taxi.

Now as the holy month of ramazan is approaching so i had decided to pray as much time as in mosque. now first of all tell me is there any option or term called as "kasr" namaz in Islam. Because when i communicated with one of my bohri community imam he told me that as u are not residing with in the same city where the mosque is so u cannot pray the full prayers for the "zohar, ashar and Isha" prayers or all those salat which is having 4 rakats to pray. he told me that for the "zohar, ashar and Isha" prayers u are liable to pray "kasr" salat. because u are living outside the city. he told me that U are liable only to pray 2 rakats with the imam for the zohar, ashar and Isha prayers. I want to know that is it true ? or is there any such provision in Islam called as " kasr namaz " Please guide me with the true information on this topic as holy month of ramazan is approaching and i want to clear this confusion before it.

And my another question is also similar to this one. He also told me that even you cannot do fasting of Ramazan when u r travelling. He even told me that as u r living in a different city and if u want to come to mosque which is there in another city u cannot do the fasting. And if u had decided to do the fasting of ramazan u cannot travel outside the boundaries of your city.

Dear Brother i dont understand what is this case in Islam ? what that imam told me is it true ? Is there any such provisions in Islam ? and if yes, then i want to know what it makes a diffrence to one`s faith and belief in allah and his religion (that is in namaz and roza ) whether he is in one city or another city ? whether he travells to one city or the other city ?

Answer:

Prayer and fasting in ramadan qasr

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Statement: May allah bless u and ur team for the noble work you are doing in the sight of Islam by guiding the millions of people through out the globe.

May Allah Subhanah reward you with the best of this world and the Hereafter for your kind comments of encouragement for our humble efforts in the propagation of the Truth. If our humble and modest efforts have helped even one brother or sister get closer to Allah and His Deen of Truth, then we would consider ourselves indeed fortunate to have been given this opportunity by the Lord Most Merciful to serve in His Cause. We hope, beg, and pray the Merciful Lord accepts our humble and weak efforts, forgives us our shortcomings, and saves you, us, and all the believers from the torment of the Hell Fire. Ameen.

Your Question: now first of all tell me is there any option or term called as "kasr" namaz in Islam.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verses 101-102:

101 When ye travel through the earth there is no blame on you if ye shorten your prayers.

Dear and Beloved Brother in Islam, to make the observance of the deen easy, the Lord Most Merciful has permitted the believers, men and women, to shorten their prayers when they are on travel as stated in the above Verse of Surah Nisaa.

There are several authentic narrations that the Messenger of Allah (saws) would shorten his prayers whenever he was on a journey. According to authentic tradition the Prophet (saws) did not stay out of Madinah for a period longer than 20 days at any one stretch where he (saws) did indeed shorten his prayers, the eminent scholars and jurists in Islam have differed on exactly how many days one may offer shortened prayers when one is on a journey, depending on which hadith they use as their evidence.

Some of the scholars have said four days, while others have allowed ten, fourteen, nineteen or twenty days, while others have said even said six months and others have said that regardless of the time, as long as one has no intention to settle down in that place, he may shorten his prayers as long as he does not return to his place of residence! Each of the eminent scholars have given their evidence from the Sunnah or tradition of the Messenger of Allah (saws) and of his noble companions, thus regardless of which school of thought one prefers over the other, as long as one has evidence from the Sunnah, it would be deemed acceptable in Shariah.

Aishah says: "One who does not put down his provision is to shorten the salah."

Ibn al-Mundhir states in his Ishraf: "The people of knowledge are in agreement that a traveler may perform ‘qasr’ (shortened) prayers as long as he does not intend to stay (permanently) in a place.’

Your Question: Because when i communicated with one of my bohri community imam he told me that as u are not residing with in the same city where the mosque is so u cannot pray the full prayers for the "zohar, ashar and Isha" prayers or all those salat which is having 4 rakats to pray. he told me that for the "zohar, ashar and Isha" prayers u are liable to pray "kasr" salat. because u are living outside the city. he told me that U are liable only to pray 2 rakats with the imam for the zohar, ashar and Isha prayers. I want to know that is it true ?

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, Allah Subhanah, in His Infinite Mercy towards His believing slaves, has given the option to a believer that if he is traveling, he has the option of praying ‘qasr’ or shortened prayers.

I am not entirely sure regarding the advice given to you by the ‘bohra community imam’….for I fail to understand how is it possible for one to join an existing congregation in a mosque who are obviously praying full prayers, and one amongst the believers behind the ‘imam’ only offers 2-rakahs of ‘qasr’ prayers????

If as you said, the mosque is an hours journey from your house, and you intend to return back to your house after the prayers…..then brother, you are not entitled to offer ‘qasr’ prayers anyways……

Your Question: He also told me that even you cannot do fasting of Ramazan when u r travelling.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 185 (part):

… Therefore from now on, whosoever witnesses it (the month of Ramadan), it is obligatory on him to fast the whole month. But if one be ill, or on a journey, he should make up the same number by fasting on other days. Allah desires to show leniency to you, and does not desire to show any hardship……

Sahih Muslim Hadith 2487 Narrated b yAisha

Hamzah ibn Amr al-Aslami asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about fasting on a journey, and he (the Prophet (saws)) said: ‘Fast if you like and break it if you like.’

If one happens to travel in the month of Ramadan, one has the option of keeping the fast when traveling, or leaving it if he believes it would be too much of a hardship and thus then make-up the fast at a later date.

Your Question: then i want to know what it makes a diffrence to one`s faith and belief in allah and his religion (that is in namaz and roza ) whether he is in one city or another city ? whether he travells to one city or the other city ?

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 20 Surah Ta-Ha verse 6:

6 To Him (Allah) belongs what is in the heavens and on earth; and everything that is between them; and all that is beneath the soil!

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, to Allah belongs everything that is in the heavens and the earth; and regardless of where a slave of Allah happens to reside or travel in the Universe, he should fear His Lord Creator, and remain subservient and obedient to his Lord wheresoever he might be or go!

Allah Subhanah has Commanded and made it absolutely obligatory upon those who sincerely believe in Him that they should offer their five obligatory prayers every day, and fast the whole month of Ramadan. But in His Infinite Mercy and Grace, and to make the following of His Deen easier for His slaves, the Lord Most Merciful has made a concession to those who are on a journey that if they wish, they may shorten their prayers; and if one happens to travel in the month of Ramadan and believes his journey would not cause him too much hardship, he may keep his fast….and if he believes that the journey would make fasting difficult for him, he may leave the fast and make it up at a later date. Thus the decision to observe one’s fast while traveling in the month of Ramadan or leave it, is entirely upto the believer.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
