Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Asalaam Alaikum wa rahemetula wa berakatahu

I am recently reverted to Islam. I feel like my heart has been opened new again. I want to know more of the spiritual side of Islam, so I have been reading many books about Islam to gain a better understanding of the religion. In several books I came across the terms 'Sufi' and 'Sufism'. I have many muslim friends, both sunni and shi'a, from all over the world and I asked them about 'Sufism'. There was about 50-50 mix. 50% didn't really know anything about 'Sufism' and the other 50% said that it is really dangerous and I should not even read about it. What intrigues me so much about 'Sufism' is the mysticism. The discipline of a life more involved in spiritualty than in the physical pleasures of the world, so I don't understand why so many people either don't know anything about it or would say that it is dangerous. My question for you is, can you please explain in great detail what  'Sufism' is all about or where I as a new muslim can learn more about 'Sufis'. Allah Hafiz...

Answer:

Sufism

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

May Allah Subhanah accept your reversion to the Deen of Truth, Al-Islam, help you, guide you, and honor you with the best of this world, and especially the Hereafter.

Brother, Islam is the name of the Way or System of Life, that is approved by our Merciful Lord and Creator of everything that exists. When one enters into the fold of Islam, he leaves behind him every belief, every ism, every notion; and blends himself with the beliefs and teachings of the Glorious Quran and the Sunnah of the Last Messenger of Allah (saws).

Sufi-ism is the name of a movement or sect of Islam, which was probably started about 700-800 years after the death of the noble Prophet of Allah (saws). Although the followers of Sufi-ism adhere to a few basic tenets of Islam, a lot of their teachings, beliefs, and practices have moved far away from the true guidance of the Quran and Sunnah.

Our sincere advice to you is to first and foremost read and study the Message of Guidance that our Merciful Creator has revealed for the guidance of all mankind, the Al-Quraan. Once you have read this Glorious Message of the Merciful, you may read or learn about any other ism; for no material or ism can ever misguide someone whose knowledge base of Truth is from the Quran! But if you accept any ism or sect theology first, and then read the Holy Quran to confirm the beliefs and practices of that ism, you might find yourself extremely disoriented and confused. Thus my beloved brother, there is no better book on this Planet Earth that will guide man to the Straight Path of Allah other than the Holy Quran!

Allah says in Chapter 2, Surah Baqarah aayat 185:"Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down: this Book is a perfect guidance for mankind and consists of CLEAR teachings which show the right way and are a Criterion of the Truth and falsehood."

The mysticism, the spirituality, the eloquence, the practicality, the theology and the Guidance of the Holy Quran is incomparable to any work of man; for the knowledge from this Message links the life of this world, to the life of the Hereafter. It teaches mankind the Truth of the life of this world, and portrays a picture of the life of the Hereafter. It guides mankind to make their real homes the homes of the Hereafter, and live in this world as if one is in transit for a little while. It links man to his Creator, and guides him to recognize the Omnipotent and Supreme Lord through His Revealed Signs.. No book of any ism, or no knowledge of any mystic or spiritual thought can even compare to the Guidance of this Divine Message of the Holy Quran!

May Allah Subhanah guide you and us all to the Path that is Straight and deserving of His Mercy and Grace.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
