One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Brother Burhan.

Assalmoalikum.

I have noticed that every time I try and learn more about Islam, I start to question my faith. When I am ignorant of the religion I have a deep and confound belief in Allah that he will save me and protect me from any and every evil in life. However due to this strong faith in Allah, I try to learn more about Islam. But as I get more knowledge I feel that my faith, "iman" gets on shaky grounds and I get blasphemous thoughts! Naoozobillah.

An example would be that I, Alhamdolillah, have performed Haj before the age of 30, and I feel very lucky to have done it. So I started learning about Islam. I listened to the translation of the Holy Quran and it clearly states that women should cover their head. However, I grew up in a secular society and feel somewhat uncomfortable wearing it. Also with 2 kids it is often inconvenient. However I feel I am very lucky that I have a husband who does not object, criticize or complain if I wear a hijab but says it is my choice completely, although other family members have said it is ok NOT to cover my head and that I should be a better Muslim in other ways.

My problem is this: I am now in a constant state of discomfort, whether I wear it or not. I feel out of place when I wear it and feel like I am committing sin, if I don`t. What should I do about wearing a hijab and also how can I study Islam without being overwhelmed.

I would appreciate your insight in this matter and may Allah reward you for your work.

Answer:

Hijab and blasphemous thoughts

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Statement: But as I get more knowledge I feel that my faith, "iman" gets on shaky grounds and I get blasphemous thoughts! Naoozobillah.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verses 61-65:

61 Behold! We said to the Angels: "Bow down unto Adam": they bowed down except Iblees: he said "Shall I bow down to one whom Thou didst create from clay?"

62 He (Iblees) said "Seest Thou? This is the one whom Thou hast honored above me! If Thou wilt but respite me to the Day of Judgment I will surely bring his descendants under my sway, all but a few!"

63 Allah said: "Go thy way; if any of them follow thee verily Hell will be the recompense of you (all) an ample recompense.

64 Lead to destruction those whom thou canst among them with thy (seductive) voice; make assaults on them with thy cavalry and thy infantry; mutually share with them wealth and children; and make promises to them. But the Shaytaan promises them nothing but deceit.

65 As for My servants no authority shalt thou have over them." Enough is thy Lord for a Disposer of Affairs.

Dear and beloved sister in Islam, for those who take their belief and Islam casually, the staunch enemy of man, the evil and accursed Shaytaan whispers into their hearts that all is fine and dandy….that they are on the right path of guidance….and there is absolutely nothing stopping them from enjoying the luxuries of this world and obtaining the rewards of the Hereafter!

It is only when one who truly wishes to learn, understand, comprehend and unconditionally obey, follow and implement the Truth of Islam into their lives…that the Shaytaan charges with his ‘cavalry’ and his ‘infantry’ and puts his whole and complete effort in creating doubts and thoughts of blasphemy in the mind of that believer….for now the Shaytaan truly fears that this person who is studying the deen and wishes to truly submit to the Lord is getting out of his well-knit and seductive web of lies and deceit.

Thus my dear and beloved sister in Islam, whenever the Shaytaan tries to put these blasphemous thoughts and doubts into your mind…recognize with absolute conviction that this is no more than the desperate and futile effort of one who is accursed by the Lord and know and believe with absolute conviction that his only objective is to take you away from the Straight Path of Allah Subhanah.

Whenever the evil and accursed Shaytaan even so much as tries to whisper these blasphemous thoughts and doubts into your mind, immediately turn back to Allah your Lord, declare refuge in Him from the evil plans of the Shaytaan by saying ‘Aoodo billahe minas Shaytaan ar-Rajeem’ (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytaan)…and recite the Muawwedaat (113th Surah Falaq and 114th Surah An-Naas) as often as you can or as much as is easy for you……it is expected that your Lord Most Merciful will protect you from every evil and every harm, Insha Allah.

Your Question: My problem is this: I am now in a constant state of discomfort, whether I wear it or not. I feel out of place when I wear it and feel like I am committing sin, if I don`t. What should I do about wearing a hijab

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 59:

O Prophet, enjoin your wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons. It is expected that they will thus be recognized, and not molested. Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 24 Surah Nur verse 31:

(O Prophet) enjoin the believing woman to restrain their gaze and guard their modesty, and not to display their adornment except that which is displayed of itself, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to display their adornments except before their husbands, their fathers, …….and also forbid them to stamp their feet on the ground lest their hidden ornaments should be displayed.

Allah Subhanah has directed the Command towards the Prophet (saws) commanding him to enjoin his wives, his daughters and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their full body, except what is displayed of itself. All the schools of thought in Islam are absolutely unanimous in their opinion that the casting of an outer garment or ‘jilbaab’ is absolutely obligatory on every believing woman who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day.

The reason any believing woman, who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day, must cover herself is because it is a direct and clear commandment of her Lord Creator, Allah Subhanah.

Allah enjoins the believing women to cover herself when not in the company of her (mehram) relatives, so that she may be recognized as a believer. Her chaste and modest clothing is a sign to the other people that she is different from the other non-believing woman. Her clothing is her certificate and a sign to others and herself that she is one who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day and obeys His Commandments.

The One Who Created, is the One Who recognizes the nature of His creation. The believing woman is commanded not to display her shape and her beauty to men other than her (mehram) relatives, so that the illegal emotions of society may be curtailed; which will result in a God-fearing and pious society for all. It should indeed be considered an honor for any believing woman, who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day, to conform to this modest uniform which none other than her Lord Creator has prescribed for her, regardless of whether those around her approve of it or not….for when it comes to the obedience of the absolutely clear and direct Commands of the Creator, no one else’s approval or consent is required or sought!

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 3696 Narrated byAn-Nawwas ibn Sam'an

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the Creator."

Dear and beloved Sister in Islam, you have a very simple choice to make as one who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day:

  1. Unconditionally submit to every Command of your Lord Creator, and earn His Pleasure and Good Will and Rewards in the Hereafter regardless of who in creation approves of it or not!
  2. or, disobey a clear and direct Command of your Lord Creator in order to please the society or those around you who do not fear Allah as He should be feared…..and in doing that take upon yourself the Wrath and Anger of the Lord which is reserved for those who openly disobey Him.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verse 24:

24 (O Prophet (saws)) Say: ‘If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; or the wealth that ye have gained, or the commerce in which ye fear a decline, or the dwellings in which ye delight,…. are dearer to you than Allah or His Messenger or the striving in His Cause; then wait until Allah brings about His Decision: and Allah guides not the rebellious!

My dear and beloved sister in Islam, for one who sincerely believes in Allah and the Last Day, and believes with absolute conviction that all will be gathered unto the Lord Most Supreme, Most Majestic on an Inevitable and Tumultuous Day of Judgment to give a full accounting of their every deed….for such a person, there is only, and we reiterate, only one choice: Always choose to obey Allah and His Messenger (saws), regardless of who in creation approves of it or not!

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of never ever being misled; but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Your Question: and also how can I study Islam without being overwhelmed.

My dear and beloved sister, if you truly want to pass the test of this short and transitory life, if you truly wish to earn the Pleasure and Good Will of your Lord, if you truly wish to enter and gain the Realms of Gardens of Eternity in the Hereafer ….then we remind you, as we remind ourselves….to be and remain totally, absolutely, and completely overwhelmed ….overwhelmed by the Supreme Majesty of the Lord Who Created, overwhelmed by the Infinite Mercy and Grace of the Lord, overwhelmed by the Knowledge, the Power, the Strength, the Bounties, the Forgiveness, the Punishments, and the Total and Absolute Majesty and Supremacy of your Lord Who Created!

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 138:

138 (Our religion is) the ‘Color’ of Allah; and whose ‘Color’ can be better than Allah? And it is He (Allah) whom we worship.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verses 207-209::

207 And there is the type of man who gives his life to earn the Pleasure of Allah; and Allah is full of kindness to (His) devotees.

208 O ye who believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly; and follow not the footsteps of the Shaytaan; for he is to you an avowed enemy.

209 If ye backslide after the clear (Signs) have come to you then know that Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.

Thus my beloved sister, be overwhelmed…overwhelmed in the pursuit of the good of the Hereafter even at the expense of the good of this short and transitory world…for Allah is our witness, this overwhelming pursuit to earn the Pleasure and Good Will of the Lord will lead you directly to the doors of the Mercy, Forgiveness, and Rewards of your Lord Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 79 Surah Naziaat verses 34-41:

34 Therefore when there comes the great overwhelming (Event)

35 The Day when Man shall remember (all) that he strove for

36 And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see

37 Then for such as had transgressed all bounds

38 And had preferred the life of this world

39 The Abode will be Hell-Fire;

40 And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (Tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires

41 Their abode will be the Garden.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
