Swallow water or bleeding break fast?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Br. Burhan:

I have a question for you, please advise accordingly, and in a timely fashion.

While fasting I went for a dental appt. During oral treatment, bleeding followed. And then while being cleaned up constantly during treatment rinsing my mouth with water, I felt I swallowed some of it too. I assumed that my fast has been broken, both because of: 1/ bleeding 2/ water rinsing of the mouth & 3/ involuntary swallowing of water

So after getting done with the dentist's office, I ate food. Please let me know in the light of Quran & Sunnah, that if I have done something wrong. And if so how should I make it up for it?

Answer:

Swallow water or bleeding break fast?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Q-1: I assumed that my fast has been broken, both because of: 1/ bleeding 2/ water rinsing of the mouth & 3/ involuntary swallowing of water

There are five things which will break or invalidate the fast:

Voluntary eating

Voluntary drinking

Sexual intercourse

voluntary semen discharge

the menstruation of the woman while fasting

Neither the bleeding, nor the rinsing of the mouth, nor the involuntary swallowing of the water would break the fast.

Q-2: So after getting done with the dentist's office, I ate food. Please let me know in the light of Quran & Sunnah, that if I have done something wrong. And if so how should I make it up for it?

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 185: Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So everyone of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if anyone is ill or on a journey the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

Beloved brother, the voluntary eating did break your fast; thus the atonement for breaking the fast is that you should make up for this missed fast, is to fast one day after Ramadan. It is expected that Allah Subhanah will accept your atonement and will give you a full reward, Insha Allah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
