One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother i work as a salesperon for a company . Our company deals in golf shirts and tshirts. While selling i keep in mind that i dont sell to pubs , nude bars , casinos or any other islamic illegal places or business. But sometimes it happens that when i sell it to my customers they sell some of it to these places. not a whole lot. i cant be dictating terms with them with not selling to these people. what is the right course of this deal .

Answer:

Selling shirts

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Beloved brother, the selling and trading of any type of clothing is deemed perfectly legal in the sight of Shariah; and the person who sells the clothing can and will in no way be held responsible for what the wearer or the re-seller does with the clothing.

Just as the seller of the clothes has absolutely no share in the reward of the person who wears his clothes and goes to the mosque; the seller of the clothes has absolutely no share in the sin of the person who wears his bought clothes and goes to the pub! Every person will be held responsible for the deed done by him.

Thus, neither is it logical nor practical that the seller of the clothes takes a guarantee from the person who buys his clothing, that he would not wear the clothes to any place that is forbidden in Islam.

Since the selling of clothing or golf shirts is a transaction which is absolutely permitted in Shariah, the right course would be to sell the merchandise without dictating terms or asking any guarantee from the buyer.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
