Pay zakat without informing

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Is it allowed to distribute the money of Zakat to the people without telling them that this money is from Zakat.Because many people hsitate to accept Zakat even they deserve for it.

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality)

Answer:

Pay zakat without informing

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

There is absolutely no harm if one distributes his Zakaah dues to people without informing them that the money is from the Zakaah. In fact, the best charity is the one that is given in absolute secrecy, thus confirming the intention that the one who gives the charity is giving it because of his love for Allah Subhanah and for not material gain, or worldly reward, or recognition.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verses 261-264:

261 The parable of those who spend their substance in the way of Allah is that of a grain of corn: it groweth seven ears and each ear hath a hundred grains. Allah giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth; and Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things.

262 Those who spend their substance in the cause of Allah, and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, for them their reward is with their Lord; on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

263 Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury. Allah is free of all wants and he is Most Forbearing.

264 O ye who believe! Cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like those who spend their substance to be seen of men but believe neither in Allah nor in the last day. They are in Parable like a hard barren rock on which is a little soil; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it (just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. And Allah guideth not those who reject faith.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.504 Narrated by Abu Huraira

The Prophet (saws) said, "Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are:

a just ruler;

a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood),

a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque);

two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only;

a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her, and says: ‘I am afraid of Allah’;

a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows who, what, and how he has given in charity).

a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears."

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
